A dioptra, a surveying instrument from the Greeks and Romans that closely resembles the theodolite or circumferentor for measuring horizontal and vertical distances. It could be used for nautical, terrestrial, and celestial measuring of distance and direction. The surveying equipment of the eighteenth century was adapted from the dioptra (Illustration by Dan Patterson).
