IfTheyGunnedMeDown is a far more popular hashtag at times, and does not always share links to #MikeBrown. Here the two markers appear to be independent with little to no correlation in their activity.

As ideological hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter and #ICantBreathe eclipsed #MikeBrown, the #EricGarner marker appeared to have a multiplier effect—amplifying activity on the Ferguson-related hashtags. Several months after the Michael Brown shooting, and in the wake of the legal decision to not indict Darren Wilson, the hashtags are much more interconnected and correlate to one another (see graphic #5).
